A national workshop on combating corruption in the media sector was held from Monday 3 to Wednesday 5 December 2012 at the Yaoundé Convention Centre as part of the ‘Radios for Citizen Politics’ project implemented by the RFI/ France 24/MCD Academy in partnership with the Union of Journalists Employed in Cameroon and with the support of the European Union delegation in Cameroon. The objectives were as follows: to assess the reality of petty and grand corruption in this sector and to develop strategies and concrete solutions with a view to cleaning up journalistic practices across all media. During the workshop, a ‘Code of Conduct for the Fight against Corruption in the Media in Cameroon’ was adopted by the 80 participants. The principle of establishing a multi-stakeholder platform to combat corruption in the media was also adopted. It should be set up with the support of the CHOC programme (Change Your Habits – Oppose Corruption). This activity was organised jointly by the SJEC (Syndicat des Journalistes employés du Cameroun) and the RFI/France 24/MCD Academy in partnership with ESSTIC (Yaoundé School of Journalism), the CHOC programme and CONAC (National Anti-Corruption Commission). The workshop was supported by the European Union delegation, whose chargé d'affaires, Mr Berlanga Martinez, came to encourage the participants at the opening and closing of the proceedings. Mr Hervé Bourges, founder of ESSTIC and former president of CSA, TF1, RFI and the Lille School of Journalism, also came to encourage participants in their commitment to fighting corruption in the media.
